The real purpose of chasing your dreams

Why I choose the road less traveled.

10 years ago I made a deal that would change my life.

After hanging up my discus shoes in high school to pursue a career of NCAA Division 1 basketball, my track coach looked me in the eye and offered a final thought:

“When you’re ready to pick that discus back up, give me a call and we’ll go to the Olympics”

Exactly 10 years later, towards the end of 2015, I picked up the phone and made that fateful call.

I am now on a crash course to realizing a life long goal of competing at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games (Read the full story here).

chasing your dreams - Ty Mara

Every day is a constant uphill battle and every day I ask myself why I am doing this.

Why do I strive for a goal, the Olympics, that feels thousands of miles away and rarely achieved by anyone on this planet?

Maybe it starts with something as simple as ‘I believe I can’.

But there’s also something deeper.

Chasing yours dreams is all about a constant mindset

I’ve come to embrace a motto: if I’m doing something I love, I might as well aspire to do it harder and with more conviction than anyone else in the world.

I live in this mindset because I’ve learned the secret behind it – the outcome is always incredible growth, learning and systemic transformation as a human being.

Why chase a dream of becoming for world class?

Through this motto of accelerated growth I am learning the lessons and skills that others will inevitably take on in their pursuits chasing big dreams. This is an even deeper layer of the answer to my questions.

I want to put myself out there and show others that despite our greatest doubts and biggest gremlins, the dream is possible.

Your dream is possible.

And I want to show that the real purpose of chasing your dreams is not in the accomplishment of any goal or dream, but rather in the daily pursuit of navigating that lonely winding path to get there.

Countless times this path spells sheer disaster – hence why it is so rarely traveled, hence why those questions surface every day. You will be knocked down, pleading with yourself to stop, scared for your life… But if we are able to persevere, just one more day, what rises out of the ash, the Phoenix of our spirit, is stronger, tougher and more resilient than we could have ever imagined.

And herein lies the magic.

Resilience, toughness, perseverance, self-understanding, etc. Are all transferable skills. They don’t speak any one language but apply to everything we do in life from this day forward.

A lesson on ‘time value’

Oddly, this sparks one of my earliest memories learning about money as a child. Lessons from my parents on the ‘time value of money’ and ‘compounding interest’…

The time value of money (TVM) is the idea that money available at the present time is worth more than the same amount in the future due to its potential earning capacity. This core principle of finance holds that, provided money can earn interest, any amount of money is worth more the sooner it is received.

Many of us are taking advantage of these principles when it comes to money, but have you thought of what the Time Value of Resilience looks like? The compounded interest on perseverance and determination?

I’m doubling down on this investment. Earning interest today on the long marathon of life.
