What’s Your Passion?

Chances are, your job and passion are not the same

Ever since I was in middle school, I’ve known that someday, in some perfect world, my life’s passions and work would be able to cross paths. That idea has taken many forms while my understanding of the world and the things I love have changed and transformed.

Do you have your dream job? Probably not, unfortunately. A 2013 Gallup poll says that

70% of US workers are dissatisfied with their jobs with 20% of those being “Actively Disengaged”

meaning they are so unhappy at their job that they try to get others unhappy about the company/jobs and are looking for new jobs.

That’s an unfortunate outlook. But I think it’s because not everyone can find success in making their hobbies and pastimes bring in a paycheck. If that was the case, we’d all be doing the things we love to do and making good money doing it. I had a grimm realization as a freshman in college that no, I probably wouldn’t become a successful producer with a recording studio in Seattle just because I new about some software and had been in a band. It’s not because of a lack of motivation, that’s just probably how things are going to go. You’d need about a million dollars to build a studio that could become successful, and it would take years to get there.

It’s a great big pile of reality that tells us that while it would be amazing and rewarding to follow our dreams of sole proprietorship, the honest truth is that we don’t want to fail, and working for a corporation is a far more lucrative way to go in the short term.

We may be happy about the job we have on a surface level because it is qualified as a “good” job. But when it comes down to it, 70% of us would rather be doing something else. They teach you that you can be whatever you want to be someday. What I’m assuming they meant to say was that just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Try to find ways you can add your passions into your job. I know it can be hard. For me, I’m actively trying to find a job that has a lot in common with what I love.

How are you incorporating your passions into your work? Do you even know what your passions are anymore? If you don’t know, what do you spend your time looking at online when there’s a bunch of free time? What do you try to bring up in common conversation? That’s where your passions are.
